Summer is here and your kids are out of school. This is one of the best times of the year for bonding with your family. You have worked hard enough: it’s time for a break. But wait—you’ve just walked in the door and there’s another crisis happening?!
Don’t let the distractions of your business keep you from taking time off and, if you can, getting away from the city with them.
Over the years, I’ve learned that one thing is certain in business: every time I open the door to the office, there will always be another major distraction or new crisis waiting for me. And I’ve learned from experience that using distractions and crises as reasons not to be able to spend significant time with your family is an excuse.
These excuses are all in our heads. They’re made up. And we made them up.
Believe me...when the crisis has passed, you’ll be left with guilt and remorse. Remorse that you did not take that time to attend your child’s soccer game or take them on summer vacation. Guilt that you chose work over the most important people in your life. Over time, this habit will not only jeopardize your relationships, but also deplete your happiness and satisfaction.
So get out and enjoy your family this summer: put them first. Things will work out. Your business will survive. And if it doesn’t, they will be there to support you through the tough times.
